A 58-year-old male asked:

does fatty liver show up as "suggestion of coarse echotexture" on us or does that always mean cirrhosis? all my labs and other organs were normal onus

It's not good: I'm a pathologist familiar with correlations. This is most likely the fibrosis that precedes cirrhosis. If your personal physician cannot promise that your liver is healthy, it is time to stop drinking. Even if you can, the 8-14 drinks weekly that you describe is too much. You're 59 years old and need to guard your health. Damage to your liver can regress if you stop now. Best wishes.

Quick response Yes: Cirrhosis is advanced liver inflammation with the multitude of complications that you see with it and none of them are great to experience. Fatty live disease on the other is mild liver enzyme elevation that you see due to the deposition of fat in the liver. Tend to see it in heavier set people.

Underlying problem: The fat doesn't cause the cirrhosis. The underlying problem -- alcohol, hepatitis c, lack of exercise, whatever -- first causes fatty change, then liver cell death and scarring.
