Dry socket paste: Depending upon your specific circumstances, if you don't have much pain, you should be fine. If it starts hurting again you should return to the dentist to have it repacked. The dry socket paste is to relieve the pain and induce healing in the socket. It should heal either way.

Options: There are many ways to "pack' a socket, depends on the Dr, experience, materials used, etc. For a more severe dry socket, the site should be anesthetized , debrided, and packed with a material to 1. stop pain 2. promote healing. 3. reinitiate a clot. Some Drs just place something in the site, which may be construed as incomplete care of the situation.
