Causes of nerve pain: There are a multitude medical conditions that can result in nerve damage/nerve pain. Shingles can result in nerve pain and sometimes in permanent neuralgia. Alcohol abuse can result in some cases in peripheral neuropathies. Spinal conditions can also result in these symptoms as can MS. There are also idiopathic causes of peripheral neuropathies. Also physical trauma can result in nerve .

Brain/Spine Injury: Pain can be the result of an irritated nerve or facet joints or other injury typically in the lumbar spine (low back) which are caused by herniated disks, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease, etc requiring further evaluation by a spine specialist. Other pain syndromes can be from spinal cord injury or brain injury or just injury to a limb resulting in complex regional pain syndrome.
