Cure of high calcium: A parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism should cure the hypercalcemia and relieve any associated symptoms such as fatigue, constipation, or excessive urination. There is a small risk of a low blood calcium all the parathyroids removed and/or damaged. If the nerve for the vocal cords is damaged hoarseness may be a problem. Over time bone density may improve and kidney stones reduced.

Normal life: Most often parathyroidectomy for primary hyper-calcimia, when removing one gland only, will result in normal life after surgery. Unless an injury occurred to the recurrent laryngeal nerve which will cause horsiness of the voice. If the hyper-calcimia is secondary to renal failure and 3 and 1/2 glands are removed, then a low calcium may develop and calcium supplement may be needed.
