A member asked:

In the past when i have had eye examinations i have gotten nauseous when the doctor shines a bright light in my eye as part of the examination. i have now been diagnosed with glaucoma. is that related?

Probably not: Glaucoma is a condition of increased eye pressure. It is normally found due to vision changes or on a routine eye examination. Because nausea is not normally associated with glaucoma, I do not feel it is related.

Unlikely: Very unlikely to be related.

Yes: It has been a known problem with narrow angle glaucoma to have nausea when the pressure goes up by the muscles constricting the outflow.

Not likely: Photosensitivity during an ocular exam is common. Aversion to examinations with nausea or a vaso vagal reaction is not unusual and tends to lessen with the examination experience over time. As far as sensitivity to light/nausea and glaucoma, not likely related except for inflammatory glaucoma or congenital glaucoma in babies in which photo aversion is common.
