Viral infection: Antibiotics aren't effective for viral infections like influenza, but if symptoms persist beyond a week, then bacterial complications(bronchitis, sinusitis, and pneumonia) may be present and antibiotics are effective then.

Ask your own doctor: You need to ask the doctor who prescribed the med. If you do have documented influenza, the antibiotic will not help. However, it may help an acute bronchitis.
