Genetics?: Look up Dr. Kevin McCauley, who makes a strong and cogent argument that addiction is - at it's core - a brain disorder, resulting in a disease. Critical to this is a higher than normal pleasure response to the addictant (related to beta-endorphin responses). You can "help it" but you might need a sophisticated framework to understand how this works in your life. There is hope.
