Routine exams: Diabetic retinopathy can progress without symptoms. Once symptoms occur, there is usually permanent damage. Best way to prevent blindness is to have routine exams, and treat certain stages of retinopathy before permanent damage occurs. Untreated diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness.
