A member asked:

I have had type 1 diabetes for over 20 years & have had background retinopathy for a while. now it has progressed abit near to macula. will i go blind?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe/not: The sensitive tissues in your eye, including the lenses are designed to operate within a specified range of glucose in your blood. When your control is marginal and you exceed these values, the environment is toxic to cells and your retinopathy or cataracts may worsen. Tight control of your blood sugars can preserve your vision for as long as possible. The future is hard to predict.
