Atelectasis occurs when the lung is not fully expanded. When you have a cough or it hurts to take a deep breath you tend to breath shallow. Take deep breaths all the way to the bottom of your lungs and you should be able to open up the area with atelectasis. If it persists your doctor can order tests to evaluate it further.
