Why is nac (n-acetylcystein) administered to antidote tylenol (acetaminophen) toxicity instead of using gluathione exogenous supplement directly?

Standard protocol ;: Good question. Nac is well-proven to work ; is the standard protocol. Glutathione might work as well or better but i'm unaware of any studies showing it works. Also, standard glutathione is poorly absorbed orally. It might work well given IV but has a short shelf-life ; is not generally available in er's. See http://www.Ncbi.Nlm.Nih.Gov/pmc/articles/pmc436956/ good luck with your condition!
