Swelling: Just elevate as much as possible--a hard cast does not allow for much swelling, so you have to keep it the swelling down as much as possible. You can also ice behind your knee, which helps--20 minutes at a time... If the toes stay purple even after elevating and icing, then yes, the cast may be too tight. You don't want it to be too loose either though...
