See answer: For a 1 cm proximal ureteral calculus, both ureteroscopy with holmium:yag laser lithotripsy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (eswl) are acceptable treatment options. The potential advantages of eswl: non-invasive, less morbidity, and lesser anesthesia and analgesic requirement. Disadvantages of eswl: less successful (~70-80%) vs ureteroscopy (~80-90%) and higher retreatment rate.
