A member asked:

Is sepsis a common problem with surgeries?

Not common: Most surgeries done on an elective basis would not be complicated by infections. Of those that do, only a small minority progress to sepsis. Likelihood is less than 1%. In an emergency, sepsis could be present even before surgery is done, chances of sepsis are in general much higher.

Which surgery?: Every surgical intervention has some risk of infection, but some more than others. We could answer your question more accurately if you let us know which surgery you are talking about.
