A member asked:

My daughter at aged 7 contracted meningitis due to a ear infection. would it have been prevented with iv antibiotics. in ae her wbc count was 14.5 109?

Confusing question: The germs that cause meningitis enter through the tissues in the nose, not the bone encased middle ear. It can happen if there is a rare perilymph fistula but i've never seen one.The germ that causes the ear infection can be in the nasal structures working their way into the meninges and show up later. You don't treat ear infections with IV meds, you can't predict who might develop meningitis ltr.
