Not really: Periodontal scaling, in a trained hand, is fairly pain free. With the use of piezo scaler, the gross calculus can be removed easily. Chelating agent can be used to soften the calculus. The secret to hand scale is sharp instrument. Finally, planning of the root to create a smooth, glass like surface is no longer needed to arrest the disease. Follow up in 4 wks and detailing is the key!

Yes but: If done without anesthetic, you will feel it. Everyone has a different pain tolerance. The same procedure done on ten different people will illicit ten different responses. Get numbed up and you shouldn't feel it. Rinse with warm salty water for three days afterwards. It's normal for teeth to be sensitive to cold for a few weeks as well. B
