Does ultrasonic scaling hurt?

It should not hurt: Ultrasonic scaling should not be painful. There may be some sensitivity on the root surfaces when the calculus is removed and the cool water reaches the nerve endings.

Might be sensitive: But there are some very effective topical anesthetic agents that can be rubbed onto the gum tissue prior to the procedure that can make it relatively painless. The procedure itself was well described by my colleague. Hope this helps.
