Usually : Usually the pain doesn't last that long but i wouldn't be too concerned. The salt water rinse (teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water) helps the gums to heal. Peridex (chlorhexidine gluconate) rinse twice a day helps as well. If the discomfort doesn't go away in a week talk to your dentist.

It : It is unusual for you to be experiencing pain this late after a deep cleaning, although i suspect that you may be hurting you teeth with aggressive brushing. I recommend that you try a warm salt water mouth wash three times a day and see if that and taking advil (ibuprofen) doesn't help your situation. Make sure that your tooth brush is soft bristled. I also strongly suggest that you call your dentist back and have him give you his opinion. He may recommend a different mouthwash like peridex. Good luck dr neil mcleod dds dentistry that lasts - quality that counts.

It : It doesnt surprise me that your gums are sore. It might take a week for you to feel better, but then i would expect your gums to feel better than before. Make sure that you continue to brush, even if it is sensitive. Your gums like the stimulation and you will need to keep your teeth free from plaque.

Normal-maybe: This is a tough answer to give. Did you possible develop apthous ulcers post root planning? Do you have any cancer sores or specific areas that are painful? You may have developed post operative complications. You should call your dr. And follow up. Apthous ulcers last 2-3 weeks post operative and can be very painful. They can become major apthous and you need treatment for this condition.
