What is thyroiditis?

Inflamed thyroid: There are different types, with different degrees of inflammation, different courses and different treatments. Acute thyroiditis is often painful but goes away on its own, although patients sometimes need meds for the symptoms. Bacterial thyroiditis is uncommon but needs antibiotics. Chronic thyroiditis is painless and often leads to hypothyroidism.

Depends on the type: Thyroiditis may be acute, subacute or chronic - each is treated differently. Find a thyroidologist through the american thyroid association web site to help understand the type you have.
