Teeth under the gums: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars are usually the last teeth on either side of the upper and lower jaws, and the most common impacted teeth. Impacted means there is something that is preventing the tooth from erupting into the mouth. The position of the developing tooth, size of the tooth, size of the jaws, and any tissue, bone or pathological problems (cysts) may prevent normal eruption.

Start at about 15: Wisdom teeth eruption can vary on ages, most likely around 15 years old. Whether the wisdom teeth erupt properly is another matter. The teeth can no erupt at all (completely impacted- in bone, bone and tissue;) partially impacted- part way through the tissue or fully erupt. Many people are born these days without wisdom teeth. Should have your dentist monitor as you get to this age.

Could you tell me what are some complications of impacted wisdom teeth?

Possible ...: Complications from impacted teeth that are not removed are several. Once there is an opening through the gum to allow saliva (thus bacteria) to reach the surface of the impacted tooth, two things can happen - decay of the tooth or infection of the gum covering it. A cyst or tumor can occasionally develop from an unerupted impacted tooth; it requires a periodic panoramic xray to detect.

Need exam to know : Wisdom teeth are extracted when there is not enough room for them to erupt and function normally. Your dentist will use x-rays to help make this determination. See a dentist to find out if you need yours extracted.

See your dentist: Wisdom teeth will usually be somewhat sore as they come in. Dentists generally take x-rays to verify wisdom tooth presence and likelihood of them erupting normally. It seems most wisdom teeth require removal, most of us don't have sufficient room for them.
