A 32-year-old member asked:
Please tell me, are retainers supposed to reach your wisdom teeth?

Often not: Wisdom teeth are often tricky to provide retainer coverage with a clear tray-type retainer. Because two jaws do not move in a parallel fashion, when teeth are covered with the same thickness material, the furthermost back tooth contacts more prematurely. This is quite true when it comes to a wisdom tooth. Thus, it is common that the retainers reach up to the wisdom tooth but do not extend over it.

Depends: If third molars integral to success and stability of your orthodontic treatment result, they should be retained. Ask your orthodontic specialist for advice as per your personal requirements.

Please tell me, are you supposed to pull your wisdom teeth?

Only if .....: Your wisdom teeth are in poor position, heavily decayed or are causing problems with adjacent teeth. Pre-historic humans typically had a longer jaw that could accommodate 3rd molars but today, most people do not have enough room for them so they need to be removed. See your dentist or oral surgeon for evaluation.

Need exam to know : Wisdom teeth are extracted when there is not enough room for them to erupt and function normally. Your dentist will use x-rays to help make this determination. See a dentist to find out if you need yours extracted.

Usually: Between the ages of 16 and 22 but it might be later or not at all. The wisdom teeth might not have enough room to come in or occasionally they do not form at all.
