It's his problem: I appreciate your concern. If the wisdom teeth begin to hurt, your son will go to the dentist. We all want to do everything for our children. Sometimes they just have to learn and decide for themselves.

See a dentist: It sounds like your son is afraid, which is a very common problem. Let him know that it is in his best interest to take care of the problem and that you will be there for him. You might want to take him to a dentist or an oral surgeon where they do sedation.

Simply put....: Chances are the longer he waits the worse the situation can become to the point where he will have no choice but to go. Get a good referral and it is ok to let the dentist know of his fear prior to starting anything. We deal with this all the time.

Reason: People have different reasons for avoiding the dentist, with fear of the dentist and pain being one of the more common reasons. Time constraints as well as economics are also other reasons. If apprehension and fear is the reason, dentistry has made significant strides in managing the fearful patient. Your son can have the surgery performed under general anesthesia if necessary.
