Use pain as guide: As you age the growth plates will close, and then the pain will completely resolve. Until then, stretch your quads regularly, use knee pads if playing on hard surfaces, ice after sports and use otc nsaids as needed. If you can tolerate the pain, then you can participate, as you are doing no internal damage.
