What is it about your eyes that cause it to look red when taking pictures with flashes?

Red reflex: A red light reflex in eyes in photos comes from light reflecting off the inside of the eye from a camera flash. Moving the flash further away from the lens of the camera will resolve this, or the redness can be removed with photo-editing software.
