Running is better: I think that the best exercise is running short sprints. Start with a modest pace and distance and increase your speed and distance as you improve your tolerance. Sprint as fast as you can for 30 - 60 seconds. Monitor your heart rate during the sprints and keep it below your top rate (220 - your age). Let your heart rate return to 100 - 110 before the next sprint.
