Critical care: you need 4 years of medical school, then internal medicine or surgery/anesthesia residency (the paths can vary) and then a critical care fellowship. in medicine, pulmonary/critical care is typically combined.

Years of schooling: An intensivist is a doctor who is board certified in critical care. This can be a fellowship (additional training) after a 3 year medical residency or 5 year surgical residency. Critical care physicians or intensivists treat the sickest patients in the hospital and usually coordinate care for patients with multi-system organ failure. It is very rewarding and I highly recommend it.
