A member asked:

Hi doctors, was just wondering what is a diffuse disc bulge measuring 2-3 mm? is that serious?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends: This will depend on the location of the disc herniation. In the lumbar area, where the spinal canal is largest, a 2-3mm bulge is not worrisome. In the cervical spine, however, where the canal is much smaller, a 2-3 mm bulge can cause compression of the spinal cord or nerve root. Your doctor can tell you whether the changes are significant.
