same thing: A "bulging disk: and a herniation are different ways of saying the same thing. L5-s1 is the lowest disk in your lumbar (lower) spine.

A matter of: Interpretation. Some people call small disc protrusions bulges. What's more important is what the disc bulge or protrusion is actually doing. That is, whether or not it's causing nerve root impingement or foraminal stenosis.
