A member asked:

Could the irises (color) of your eye serve a purpose for vision, or is it soley the pupil?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Two parts of same: The iris, the muscle that opens and closes is the reason the pupil exists as the opening in the middle of the iris. Aside from protecting the eye from bright light, the opening assists in focusing as a narrow pupil gives a slightly sharper image. The iris structure shields the back of the eye from too much light.
