A few things: There is a band of tough tissue that runs down your out leg called the iliotibial band. Inflammation where it attaches to the knee can cause issues. If you have any disorder or patellar tracking such a patellofemoral syndrome, this can be a problem as well. Your doctor should be able to perform a few orthopedic exams in office help localize the problem.
