ER treatment: Very few, if any, er's at hospitals will do any type of dentistry. They usually just prescribe pain medication and antibiotics and refer you to your own dentist. Even if the hospital has a dental residency program, treatment will be normally be rendered there under normal program hours. When was your last dental check-up and do you go regularly? That tends to prevent these emergency situations.

Tooth ache: A tooth can be hurting and loose for many reasons. The last resort is to take the tooth out. An er generally will refer you to your dentist for an evaluation, rather than take a tooth out.

Probably not: Most hospital emergency rooms do not have a dental staff to perform routine dentistry, which this is. Er's will evaluate your condition, prescribe meds, and possibly perform and incision and drainage if the infection is deemed serious enough. Please call a local dentist for care.

Not usually: The er is never the first or best place to go for a toothache! go to a dentist!

Wrong place: Would you have your dentist treat an emergency appendix problem? Then why would you expect an er physician to treat an emergency dental problem. Tooth and/or surrounding gums/bone may be infected. Need to see a dentist for diagnosis and rx. Your problem is the 'poster child" for the recommendation for regular dental check-ups. Please call dentist now.
