Seek care: Varicose veins often hurt. It may be that it is simply the varicose veins causing pain, but it could certainly be something more serious. Anytime there is a sudden change in a chronic condition, it should be checked out. Your friend should see her primary care doctor or a vein specialist (phlebologist).

Very Typical: Interestingly, there is a wide variety in the scope and variety of symptoms that varicose vein patients may show. Some people have extensive, large veins with little or no symptoms, while others have few, very small veins with terrible symptoms, and still others may have have veins for years, and then begin to develop symptoms. In any case, complications can arise and they should be evaluated.

Evaluation needed: Sudden onset of pain in a varicose vein can indicate phlebitis/thrombophlebitis. Start by seeing your doctor and, if necessary, a vein specialist. It is likely that an ultrasound is needed to evaluate the veins and make sure that the only trouble your friend has is uncomplicated varicose veins. If that is the case, then a number of treatment possibilities exist.
