Appy: There is no true known use for the appendix it is a vestigial organ. Appendicitis is caused by a local inflammation of the lymph nodes that causes obstruction of the lumen of the appendix the treatment is surgical removal of the appendix.

Vestigial Organ: Currently, the appendix appears to have no use at all. It may have had a function in millennia past, but now only sits there and makes some of us sick. There is a meckel's diverticulum, remnant of the embryonic vitelline duct. Maybe the appendix is related to that. Appendicitis is when it becomes inflamed because it gets blocked by something, often a calcified piece of poop.
