A member asked:

I was wondering what are the effects of spleen removal?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends on: Reason for splenectomy. Other than immediate complications such as hemorrhage, infection, or injury to adjacent organs, two potential problems. If you had it for reasons other than trauma, you are at increased risk of thromboembolic disease from increased platelets. All patients who have had splenectomy are at small increased risk of infection with pneumococcus, so they should get pneumovax.
