Spleen removal: Removal of the spleen will make it more difficult for the body to fight infection with certain bacteria. If the spleen has been removed, the doctor will usually order a pneumococcus shot a few days after surgery. This will help the body fight the bacteria that the spleen usually is able to kill. Booster shots should be given every 10 years or so for the rest of the patient's life.
