Until controlled: Until you gout is controlled they can be common. Once your uric acid level is controlled - usually staying under 6, then your body is much less likely to form monosodium urate crystals which are the crystals that precipitate in your tissues and your body and cause gout. This will control your gout and this will depend on your compliance to your medications.

Common but should no: They should not be common with proper rx. If you or anyone has frequent attacks, ask are you adhering to lifestyle changes and taking your medicine. If you are, question your therapy!
