Allopurinol: For frequent flares, you should talk to your doctor about use of medications such as Allopurinol to prevent flares. You should wait at least 4-6 weeks after flare has resolved to start allopurinol. There is an increased risk of flare when it is first started. A flare can be avoided by using colchcine (a gout specific anti-inflammatory) as prophylaxis. Talk to your doctor.
