Surgery: It sounds as if you have an ingrown toenail. Part of the nail needs to be removed to get rid of the source. See a podiatrist orthopdist or general surgeon.

NAIL SURGERY: If it's a recurring problem, once the infection is cleared, the podiatrist can put a chemical-phenol or sodium hydroxide are the two common ones-in the corner to kill the root. This can be done in the office. Another type, used if there is thick skin overgrowing the nail border, doesn't use a chemical, but uses a surgical blade to remove the root, and maybe a stitch or two.
