Ingrown Toenail: The pain could be from the nail, infection, or both. Most people who try "kitchen surgery" do not remove the entire ingrown portion of the toenail, making it worse. Infection becomes more likely. Clean it with hydrogen peroxide, apply antibiotic ointment, and cover with a bandage. See a podiatrist ASAP to make sure the entire ingrown nail was removed.

Possibly: Can also be start of infection. Redness, drainage and swelling are indicative of infection. Try soaking and apply topical antibiotic. If this pain continues or if these symptoms appear, see Podiatrist.
