Lumps: Doctors are trained to know the difference. If they are in doubt then they usually will biopsy to be sure.

Removal is the test: The procedure he is doing is called an excisional biopsy. Sometime lesions can be cancerous on only one part, so biopsying just a part of the lesion can miss the cancer. If he is worried enough to remove it, you want the whole thing removed, as long as the procedure is not disfiguring. If the lesion is on your face, it may be worth a second opinion from a dermatologist before removing it.
