Soft tissue swelling: Due to trauma , caused by broken blood vessel. As long as function of hand full there is no need for expensive test or treatment.

Xray time: With the amount of pain and swelling you describe, it sounds to me like you need an xray. Some of your carpal and metacarpal bones, if broken, need to be addressed sooner rather than later to make sure they heal properly. So, you can ice and elevate it now, but i would have it checked out pretty soon.
