Various: If you have a history of tobacco use, any sore on the tongue should be checked to make sure it's not a cancerous growth. Other causes can include viral infections and trauma to the area from teeth. You should be able to sooth it with topical preparations like Lidocaine and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) to decrease the inflammation. See an ENT or trained dental professional for an evalaution.

See your dentist: See your dentist who can diagnose what you have and suggest treatment. It could be accidental traumatic injury from sharp tooth or filling or accidental bite, bacterial or viral infection, or a canker sore just to mention a few possibilities.
