You may also want to check for 'adverse reactions' of any medications that you are taking, since they sometimes cause dry mouth. You may have bit your tongue during your sleep. However, any concern about lesions or sensations on the lateral borders of the tongue require a thorough evaluation by an oral surgeon or oral pathologist.

Burning tongue: First thing that comes to mind is Burning Tongue Syndrome. However, there are many other possibilities. You will have to be examined to be diagnosed. Two specialists come to mind, see an Oral Pathologist or an Oral Surgeon.
