Avulsion fracture: Ligaments provide stability to joints. When there is an injury to a joint, the ligaments can be sprained or completely torn. The ligaments run from one bone to another. When an injury occurs they may be torn, or one end may separate off of a bone. Sometimes rather then separate off of the bone, the ligament takes a piece of the bone with it. This is an avulsion fracture.
