MRI : Stress fractures and ligament injuries sometimes require MRI for definitive diagnosis. A bone scan can also show a stress fracture that does not show up on x-ray. Often these injuries are treated effectively based on a patients symptoms, history and exam findings. Advanced imaging studies are not always necessary.

Xray + Physical Exam: In order to identify whether you are suffering from a stress frature vs ligament tear, some form of radiologic imaging should be performed (ie. Xray or MRI). More importantly a full examination should be performed by an orthopedist or podiatrist. Your primary care provider is good place to start as well. I hope this helps!
