Circumstance depends: Most common reason for blood in spinal fluid is from the vessels running beneath the spinal canal. These are frequently damaged during the tap, but nothing is wrong with these babies. Blood can also be present from an infection such as herpes, or premature babies can have bleeding in the brain, which can be transferred into the spinal fluid.
