How are total cholesterol, ldl direct and ldl calculated different?

See below: Calculated LDL = total cholesterol -(hdl cholesterol + triglycerides/5). If total triglycerides are above 400 this calculation is not valid. Ldl can be measured directly and the direct assay is not dependent on triglyceride levels.
