Grinding: You cannot control grinding. Sometimes grinding is related to sleep apnea. Get evaluated for sleep apnea. If sleep is ok then a night guard will help.

Sleep bruxism: Has been defined as "tooth grinding, or clenching during sleep. Sleep bruxism occurs mainly during the rem (dream stage). Your nap is too short to get to rem and bruxing. There is no treatment for this condition, but you can get a hard night guard to protect your teeth. Rec. See your dentist or orofacial pain specialist.

No Nap Grinding: Recent studies @ ucla and usc suggested that night bruxism is a midbrain function. It occurs as a side effect to the limbic system sorting and clearing needless data from the brain. In a simplistic way like your computer doing a defrag or clean disc function. Not in deep sleep this may not happen, like a nap. Treatment : a night appliance fully adjusted by your dds/dmd. Also check for sleep apnea.
