Many things: Grinding or bruxism as it is called is caused by many things including overbite, sleep problems, and uneven wear of teeth or new fillings.

Many factors: Usually stress and related things can cause this. Also malocclusion of teeth and TMJ as well. You might want to try a medicine like Elavil (amitriptyline) which your doctor can prescribe as well as a mouthguard at night. Also anecdotally I have seen cases where pinworm infections esp in kids can cause this interestingly enough. See your doctor if this persists.
