Decongestant : Twenties female experiences ear pain at airplane landing. Counteracting activities include spraying afrin (oxymetazoline) into each nostril one-half hour before landing, and to chew gum and perform valsalva maneuvers during descent. The valsalva maneuver is similar to straining to pass hard stools or while pinching both nostrils shut while gently forcing lung air into oral-pharyngeal regions to make ears pop.

Narrow canal ; ears: Narrow ear canals alone should not account for what you are describing. I would have your local ENT (ear nose and throat) specialist check your ear drums and measure your middle ear pressures. Based on what is seen, they can make recommendations on how to guard against painful ears during plane landings.
